This past Sunday we turned our clocks forward one hour and are now officially on British Summer Time (BST). Moving the clock forward is such a hopeful gesture. It indicates an expectation of coming warmth, long hours of sunshine, and all around happiness. I may be exaggerating on the happiness part but these days a very simple equation can explain my state of mind: warmth + sunshine = happiness. So I was happy to lose that hour of sleep in anticipation of all those great things previously mentioned. And then we had the worst week of weather we’ve had since we moved here. Seriously. On Wednesday evening this was the view from our balcony:

So to all my friends Stateside who are pulling out the shorts, skirts, tanks, and flip flops, think of me. I’m still enjoying the pleasures of base-layers, wool socks, thermal underwear, scarves, mittens, and hats. And it’s now April. Today is sunny but frigid. It feels like a cold crisp Colorado-in-December sort of day.
Anyway, on to other news. We are still without internet – which means I’m relegated to Starbucks. There are a few moments where you’ll find me sitting in our flat with my knees up to my chin, laptop precariously balanced on those knees trying desperately to poach someone else’s signal. Scotty gets a kick out it. But internet-free life does have it’s perks. I’m still trying to figure out what those are and will let you know when I do.

Fumbling toward home 
Your balcony is awesome!! The street you live on looks amazing. The weather you are looking at is horrible. I am so sorry!! I really feel for you. It is not super nice this week in Oregon, but it is nothing like that. Drink some hot chocolate for me. Love you!!!
Oh dear–well, one thing is for sure, you and Scotty found an amazing place to live! And how wonderful to watch spring emerge from your lovely view! Ah . . . as Shakespeare said, and as we used to say in Cape Cod–April is the cruelest month! Hmmm . . . I thought it didn’t snow in Edinburgh! Well, on the bright side, at least allergies aren’t a problem now?

Hi Rebecca, actually I am jealous of your snow! We’ve had gales here but the snow has virtually passed us by, even though neighbours 8 miles up the glen were having to dig their way to school by tractor…
Anyway, the gales brought our power lines down, so I was without the internet for a couple of days. And I discovered one of the perks – I got SO much more done! All that admin that backs up while I’m footering about on the web – done. So I hope you can enjoy making the most of your web-free time! Meanwhile I can only dream of Starbucks – our closest one is about 60 miles away (in Stockbridge, in fact).
